How to do it
You need: A clear walkway of a few metres, Floor markers such as strips of tape, and a helper to give cues.
Set out a clear, uncluttered walkway. Place tape lines on the floor about one comfortable step length apart. Have a helper walk alongside you.
- Stand tall at the start of the walkway.
- Walk forwards, aiming to land one foot on or just past each floor marker.
- As you step, think 'heel first, then lift my toes to clear the floor'.
- Let your helper cue 'big step' or 'stand tall' as needed.
- Turn in a wide curve using several small steps, then walk back.
Form cues
- Each foot clears the floor cleanly, with no scuffing or catching.
- Your steps are even in length on both sides.
- You look ahead rather than down at your feet once the rhythm is going.
Common mistakes
- Watching your feet the whole time, which rounds your posture.
- Taking shorter, quicker steps as you tire.
- Turning sharply on the spot instead of stepping around a curve.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, sudden new weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, or a severe headache.
