How to do it
You need: A mirror.
Sit comfortably in front of a mirror in good light, close enough to see both sides of your face clearly, and let your face rest in a neutral position before you start. Use this once the basic smile is even and comfortable.
- Start with a small even smile, then widen it by pushing both mouth corners up and out.
- Let your teeth show if that happens naturally, keeping both sides moving together.
- Watch the mirror and hold the stronger side back so the weaker side can keep up.
- Hold the wide, even smile for a few seconds, then slowly relax.
Form cues
- keep the two sides even; move the weaker side only as far as it can match the stronger side; never force
- Both mouth corners lift to a similar height.
- The rest of your face stays relaxed, especially your eyes and forehead.
Common mistakes
- Going for the widest possible smile so the weaker side is left behind.
- Progressing to this before the basic smile is even and comfortable.
- Tensing your neck to help the movement.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if you develop new facial twitching or tightness, or movements start happening in more than one area at once (for example your eye closing when you smile).
