How to do it
You need: A mirror.
Sit comfortably in front of a mirror in good light, close enough to see both sides of your face clearly, and let your face rest in a neutral position before you start.
- Take a normal breath, then close your lips and puff both cheeks out with air.
- Watch the mirror and keep both cheeks filled evenly.
- If air leaks from the weaker side, gently hold that corner of your lips closed with a clean finger.
- Hold for a few seconds, then release the air slowly.
Form cues
- keep the two sides even; move the weaker side only as far as it can match the stronger side; never force
- Your lips stay sealed so the air does not escape.
- Both cheeks look about equally full.
Common mistakes
- Puffing so hard that you strain or feel pressure in your ears.
- Letting the air slip out of the weaker side without supporting the lip with a finger.
- Rushing on without letting your face relax between puffs.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if you develop new facial twitching or tightness, or movements start happening in more than one area at once (for example your eye closing when you smile).
