How to do it
You need: A standing frame, tilt table or other supported standing equipment set up by your team.
Your helper or team sets you up in the standing frame or supported standing device, with the straps and supports fitted as you were shown. Have your blood pressure checked first if you tend to feel faint on standing.
- Move into standing slowly, pausing partway if you feel light-headed.
- Once upright, check your knees, hips and trunk are supported and comfortable.
- Stand for your set time, breathing normally and keeping your head up.
- Come down slowly, then sit or lie for a few minutes afterwards.
Form cues
- Your skin over bony areas stays free of pressure points and rubbing.
- You feel steady and supported, with no dragging or pinching from the straps.
- Any light-headedness settles within a minute or two of being upright.
Common mistakes
- Standing longer than agreed before your tolerance has been built up.
- Ignoring early light-headedness, sweating or a thumping heartbeat.
- Leaving skin unchecked before and after, especially where you cannot feel it.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if you feel faint and it does not clear, get a pounding headache with sweating or a blocked or runny nose, or find a new skin mark or sore.
