How to do it
You need: A clear space with a worktop or wall on one side.
Stand in a clear space with a worktop or wall within reach on one side. Make sure the floor is free of rugs and clutter.
- Take a few steps forwards at a normal pace.
- To turn, take several small steps in a curve, walking your feet round rather than twisting on one spot.
- Let your head and eyes lead the turn, looking where you want to go.
- Finish facing the other way with your feet hip-width apart, then walk back and repeat.
Form cues
- The turn takes four or five small steps, not one or two big pivots.
- Your feet keep clearing the floor, with no twisting or scuffing on the spot.
- You feel steady enough that you could pause halfway through the turn if you needed to.
Common mistakes
- Spinning quickly on one foot, which is a common way to lose your balance.
- Crossing one leg tightly over the other during the turn.
- Turning your feet while your head stays fixed - let your eyes lead.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, a near-fall, or new dizziness or leg weakness.
