How to do it
You need: An exercise mat or carpeted floor, A small toy to look at or reach for.
Have your child lie on their tummy on a mat in a clear space, with their legs straight and their arms stretched out in front. Put a favourite toy on the floor just in front of their hands.
- Ask your child to lift their head and chest off the floor to look at the toy, like a flying superhero.
- Add lifting both arms off the floor, reaching forwards towards the toy.
- Then add lifting both legs a little way off the floor.
- Hold the flying position for a few seconds while you count together.
- Lower everything down slowly and rest flat before the next go.
Form cues
- The lift comes from the back and tummy, with the movement spread along the spine.
- The neck stays long, with the gaze forwards and slightly down rather than craned right up.
- Your child breathes and counts out loud during the hold, rather than holding their breath.
Common mistakes
- Yanking up fast into a big arch instead of a smooth, gentle lift.
- Practising straight after a meal, which can feel uncomfortable on the tummy.
- Adding more holds when your child is tired and their movement is getting sloppy.
Safety: Stop and message your child's physio if your child has increasing pain, a limp that does not settle, or is much more tired or unsettled than usual.
