How to do it
You need: A plastic bag or smooth board to put under your heel.
Lie on your back on the bed with both legs straight, and put something smooth under the heel of the operated leg so it slides easily.
- Check the kneecap and toes of the operated leg point straight up at the ceiling.
- Slide the operated leg out to the side as far as is comfortable, keeping it flat on the bed.
- Slide the leg slowly back until it reaches the other leg.
- Stop when the legs meet - do not bring the operated leg across the middle of your body.
Form cues
- The kneecap and toes stay pointing at the ceiling, so the leg does not roll inward.
- The slide out and back is slow and smooth.
- You bring the leg back only as far as the midline, never across it.
Common mistakes
- Letting the operated leg roll in so the toes turn toward the other foot - this breaks your hip precautions.
- Bringing or crossing the operated leg over the midline of your body.
- Arching your lower back or hitching your hip to move the leg further.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if the hip becomes very painful or feels like it has slipped, or the wound is hot, red, or leaking, or your calf becomes painful and swollen.
