How to do it
You need: A set of bathroom scales, A stable rail or surface to hold.
Stand holding a firm rail or surface, with a set of bathroom scales placed under the foot of the healing leg.
- Check the weight-bearing limit your surgeon has set, such as toe-touch only, a set number of kilos, or a share of your body weight.
- Slowly press the healing leg down onto the scales until you reach that amount.
- Hold it steady for a few seconds so you learn how that pressure feels through the leg.
- Ease the weight off slowly and rest before the next go.
Form cues
- You match the exact amount your surgeon allows and no more.
- You use the scales as a guide until the right pressure feels familiar without them.
- Your hands stay ready on the rail for support.
Common mistakes
- Putting more weight through the leg than your surgeon has cleared.
- Moving yourself on to more weight before your surgeon or physio says it is safe.
- Leaning and limping heavily rather than using the walking aid you were given.
Safety: Stop and message your physio if the pain suddenly increases, the leg makes a new noise or gives way, or the wound becomes hot, red, or leaks.
